the thing with doing it myself is I won't be able to do it for long. I have to return to school at the end of summer. And there's no way my mom can handle that.. she's never touched him let alone put a needle in him.

Melodie, the only reason I suggested is that things are not absolute in avian medicine. If I would listen to my first vet, Bill should have been dead 5 years ago. Its worth a try - the end of summer is still a months away, give it a try. I have been on your end, and I was lucky. What if you are lucky too?
Dehydrated struggling bird CAN come back in kidney failure. Look at Bill - he is not the healthiest but he is doing fine. Its not a radical treatment. Its supportive fluids.

Zippo passed in the night... he was looking terrible all day yesterday. Now I guess he can live without the pains of kidney disease and can fly and eat wherever he pleases... RIP

My heart goes to you and your family. Melodie, Zippo was (and is) a very special bird to a lot of us and we grief with you. I am with you - I am glad he is not suffering any longer and I am glad his illness was short. His angel was watching over him.
This morning I was playing with dogs in the backyard, and a bunch of little birds when by playing in the air. I thought to myself that they reminded me of my Cri-Cri (green budgie) playing. It could have been Zippo flying free. I watched them till I could no longer see or hear their cheerful calls.
Hugs to you and your family!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, Melodie. Zippo was a special baby and I know you loved him. I know that you wanted the best for him. As much as you are hurting, please know that Zippo is no longer hurting and is flying free.
Zippo has a lot of friends waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge. And you have a lot of people who understand your loss and how you are feeling.
*big hugs*
